"Once in a lifetime there comes a project that changes your
perspective, changes your photography, changes your
thinking and changes your life.
"
A by-product of Gerry's experiences and
work thus far, has been the creation of the
Wild Orphans book (cover right); sensitively
produced by Welcome Books with the
guiding hand of Natasha Tabori Fried and
the commitment of Gerry's long-time friend
and publisher Lena Tabori.
The lead elephant on the cover, the back and in the story, is
Natumi, a sprite little African elephant; she and her seven
orphan companions are entering their  second decade of life in
the wilds of Tsavo East National Park, Kenya.  Natumi continues
to inspire Gerry's passion to chronicle the "Orphan 8" story -
"My
hope is to take up her story now, ten years later, and once
again share time in her life, and that of the other Orphan 8
which so changed my life's journey."

Wild Orphans was internationally recognized in 2002 as the
Outstanding Nature Documentary, by the judges at Visa Pour l’
Image, International Journalism Awards (France)

Gerry's return journey in a new website that has been created
specifically around the
Wild Orphans project.
Gerry's photographic journeys in Africa began in the 1980's and
flourished during dozens of trip and extended stays throughout
the early 1990's.  During those years African elephants always
held a fascination, but as Gerry put it,
"they were too easy,
everyone photographed them, I wanted to say something
special about such a breath-taking creature - so I decided to
wait - then, just when I thought Africa was no longer a part of
my future, I re-stumbled across the elephant orphanage at
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi."
